Jagdeep Dhankhar's Exit: Did Congress Score A Political Win Or Did it Backfire?
Congress's separate impeachment motion against Justice Varma aimed to pressure the government on the Yadav issue.
The political storm over Vice President Dhankhar’s resignation stems from a Congress strategy meeting on July 8 at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. Senior leaders, such as P. Chidambaram, aimed to force the government’s hand by discussing the impeachment of Justice Varma and pressing for action on Justice Yadav. The trigger was Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s remark contrasting corruption with a speech by the two judges.
Congress submitted a separate impeachment motion against Justice Varma in Rajya Sabha, collecting support from opposition parties. This maneuver was designed to press the government on the Yadav issue.
Kharge, Kejriwal, and Ramesh presented the motion to the Vice President, who assured them he would review it. When Dhankhar raised the motion on July 22 in Rajya Sabha, uproar followed. Although the government was unsettled, Congress viewed the move as successful—despite further straining the opposition's unity.
Tensions rose as allies like the TMC and SP, as well as some Congress MPs, objected to perceived sympathy toward Dhankhar. Jairam Ramesh’s social media post, in which he called Dhankhar “kisan putra” and lamented his farewell, drew criticism. Ironically, Congress had proposed the unbacked farewell speech at the BAC meeting.
Now, questions remain: Did Congress strengthen its position or damage its credibility by trying to score political points while expressing regret for a man it moved to impeach?
