Tragic Air India Flight Crash Near Ahmedabad Airport

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Air India flight AI-171, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport with 232 passengers and 12 crew members on board, crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad airport.

The incident is believed to have occurred when the flight was taking off for London. A thick plume of smoke is billowing from Dharpur near the Meghaninagar area, a stark visual of the tragedy.

It was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, VT-ANB and call sign AIC171.

The DGCA later stated that flight AI-171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, which occurred at approximately 1:17 PM. The Boeing aircraft, carrying 242 people, issued a MAYDAY call before losing contact. The plane went down beyond the airport perimeter.

The fire brigade has rushed to the scene, dispatching three vehicles, and emergency response teams are being continuously mobilised. Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the crash, and more details are awaited.

Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the crash of flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London as a “tragic accident.” He extended his condolences to the families affected and stated that the airline’s priority is to support victims and assist emergency teams. An emergency centre and support teams have been activated for the families.

Union Civil Minister Ram Mohan Naidu posted on X, “Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on the highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families.”

Due to the incident, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad is presently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended.
