The Indian Premier League (IPL) has firmly established itself as a global titan in the realm of sports entertainment, celebrated as the most lucrative and widely viewed T20 cricket league in the world. The league's financial landscape is significantly influenced by the merger of Jio and Star under the auspices of Reliance Industries. This strategic move is expected to boost revenue projections to $600 million, with team sponsorship revenues potentially reaching Rs 1,300 crore, marking a new era in the league's business strategy.

This strategic consolidation enhances audience targeting and encompasses a combined television and digital viewership of 500 million. In stark contrast to last year, when advertising revenue was merely half of its current figure, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Media rights, franchise investments, and global sponsorships have collectively propelled the IPL's brand value to an impressive $12 billion in 2025, reflecting a 13% increase from the previous year. JioHotstar, under the stewardship of Mukesh Ambani, is projected to generate approximately ₹4,500 crore from digital advertising in the ongoing season. Ambani is harnessing the IPL in innovative and unprecedented ways, such as using cutting-edge AI-driven advertising techniques to achieve record viewership and secure substantial sponsorship agreements, thereby setting new standards in sports marketing.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stands out as the most valuable franchise in the IPL, with a brand valuation of $122 million, closely followed by the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The champions, RCB, garnered a commendable financial reward of INR 130 million, a significant increase from previous seasons. Additionally, the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians, finishing third and fourth, respectively, secured INR 70 million and 65 million. These financial rewards reflect the growing financial stakes in the IPL.

Team RCB celebrates

On June 3, 2025, the Indian Premier League reached its grand finale with an illustrious match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Punjab Kings at the esteemed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Royal Challengers Bangalore triumphed, ending a 17-year quest for their inaugural IPL title. The long-awaited glory has finally graced RCB, dispelling the anguish that has lingered since 2016, when they fell short by a mere nine runs. After nine arduous years, redemption has finally arrived.

In the realm of sport, the triumph of one team invariably translates to anguish for another, and it was the Punjab Kings who found themselves on the receiving end of this poignant reality. They valiantly battled their way to the final, a collective of uncapped talents uniting behind their international counterparts, exceeding expectations and making a significant impact. Regrettably, their efforts did not culminate in success today, reminiscent of their experience in 2014. Shreyas Iyer, a leader of exceptional calibre, stands among the finest ever to guide an IPL franchise. He is distinguished as the sole captain to have steered three different teams to the finals, having led KKR to a championship victory last season in 2024.

In Bengaluru, the chant resonated powerfully as the city embraced a night of jubilant festivities. Amidst the anticipation and anguish, the hope and heartbreak, the joy and despair, the elation and devastation, this moment marked the zenith of experience, deserving of complete celebration by cricket enthusiasts. Central to this celebration was one individual who exemplified the fervour— the man who dons the number 18, an icon of the team, a testament to 18 years of loyalty, patience, and steadfast support. He is a figure who has unreservedly invested his blood, sweat, and tears—Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli finally ended his long wait to get their hands on the coveted IPL trophy in 2025. At the end of the final, Kohli opened his heart out, "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, my pride, and my experience. And I've tried to win this every season that I come. And I've given everything I have. And to finally have this moment come, it's an unbelievable feeling."

Kohli's journey revealed an intriguing paradox. He had amassed an impressive collection of titles throughout his illustrious career, including the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2008, the ODI World Cup in 2011, the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2025, multiple Asia Cups, the ICC Test Mace for three consecutive years, and the T20 World Cup in 2024. Yet, one coveted trophy remained just out of reach—the IPL. But that all changed on June 3, 2025, when he finally conquered that elusive challenge.

Kohli stands as one of only four players since the inception of the IPL in 2008—alongside MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Manish Pandey—and notably, he is the sole athlete to have remained with a single franchise throughout all 18 seasons; even Dhoni and Rohit do not share this distinction. The anticipated IPL victory in 2025 can be regarded as a fitting culmination of his enduring commitment to the sport.

One can observe numerous remarkable facets of Kohli's evolution; he has maintained his relevance within the league from its inception in 2008 through to Season 18 in 2025, despite the considerable transformations that cricket, particularly T20 cricket, has undergone. He has adapted in tandem with the game. Consequently, the accelerated pace of play and the increase in scoring have not diminished his focus. Instead, he has consistently challenged himself and enhanced his performance.
