Despite its seemingly modest size and easy vehicle access, Pratapgad Fort stands as the tallest in the region and holds a significant place in history. It served as a crucial guardian of the Ambenali Ghat, an ancient trade route connecting the Deccan region to the Konkan. The fort witnessed a famous battle that catapulted Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to global recognition. His valour during those decisive moments played a pivotal role in shaping India's destiny.
Pratapgad Fort is steeped in the rich history of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his legendary encounters with Afzal Khan. The fort proudly houses the ancient Swayambhu Shankar temple and the Tulja Bhavani goddess, both of which were established by Chatrapati Shivaji. The ascent to the fort, with its 475 steps, is a journey through history, taking approximately 90 minutes to reach significant sites within. These sites include the entrance gate, Bale Killa, four watchtower buruj, a water reservoir, the darbar area, Kade Lot (the small cannons used by soldiers), secret escape routes, execution sites, and a beautiful statue of Chatrapati Shivaji surrounded by a garden.
Please be sure to bring a water bottle, a cap, and sturdy shoes for the climb, which is challenging but rewarding, featuring lush trails that lead to panoramic views of the valleys and surrounding peaks. The site is a year-round destination, mesmerising in every season, making it essential to visit to appreciate the history while exploring the area. Parking is available at the base, though it may not accommodate a large number of vehicles. Hiring a guide is recommended for a detailed understanding of the history, and guides are available at reasonable rates.

Currently, Pratapgad Fort is undergoing a transformative restoration process under the auspices of the Maharashtra Tourism Ministry. We eagerly anticipate the fort's return to its former glory. The archaeology department is diligently working on the comprehensive conservation of Pratapgad Fort, with a particular focus on restoring the exterior of the main wall.
