Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir's rhetoric

Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir has made a striking statement regarding the country's nuclear capabilities, emphasising that Pakistan is indeed a nuclear-armed nation. Munir asserted in the US, "If we think we are going down, we'll take half the world down with us."

Munir made his comments during a formal dinner held by a businessman of Pakistani descent in Florida on August 9, 2025, addressing an audience of over 100 individuals. Munir was in the U.S. to participate in a farewell event for General Michael Kurilla, the 15th leader of the United States Central Command.
Significance of the US Central Command and the use of Pakistan's space

Michael Kurilla, the chief of US Central Command (CENTCOM), concluded his term and handed over his role to Admiral Brad Cooper during a ceremony held at the Tampa Convention Centre in Florida. Kurilla, in his role since 2022, served as the US military official responsible for overseeing the assault on Iranian nuclear sites during Iran's 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025 and also directed the naval operations against the Houthis.

CENTCOM is tasked with safeguarding and advancing U.S. interests across 20 countries in the Middle East, Central and South Asia, as well as the critical waterways that connect them.

The US needs Pakistan and its resources for its CENTCOM operations.

The conflict with Iran is not yet over. In April 2025, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, the Defence Minister of Pakistan, acknowledged that the nation had provided support to terrorist organisations for thirty years, ever since the US and the Soviet Union engaged in Afghanistan in the 1080s.

Pakistan has conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), or Order of Excellence, its highest military honour, upon General Michael Kurilla to demonstrate loyalty to the United States. In June, President Donald Trump invited Munir to a lunch at the White House.

The Background

Both India and Pakistan have nuclear arms and were engaged in their most severe conflict in May 2025, triggered by an assault on tourists in Kashmir by terrorists affiliated with Pakistan-based extremist organisations the month before that, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. On May 10, India struck various significant Pakistani military sites under Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the tragic murder of tourists in Pahalgam.

On the night of May 9-10, India deployed approximately 15 BrahMos missiles along with other precision weapons to strike crucial Pakistani airbases. This operation, executed by the IAF, resulted in damage to 11 of Pakistan's 13 primary airbases, severely impacting the country's air defence system and military infrastructure.

During Operation Sindoor, India attacked and severely dented Pakistan's nuclear arsenal at Kirana Hills in Pakistan. Kirana is a highly secure region linked to Pakistan's nuclear arms program. It is thought to contain an underground facility for nuclear weapon storage and function as a location for nuclear research and testing, including subcritical atomic tests carried out in the 1980s.

The well-known satellite imagery expert and geo-intelligence researcher Damien Symon shared and analysed satellite images on X. He noted, “An update from Google Earth of the Sargodha area in Pakistan, taken in June 2025, reveals — 1. The site of India's strike on Kirana Hills in May 2025; 2. The repaired runways at Sargodha airbase following India’s strikes in May 2025.”
India's response

Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for India's foreign ministry, emphasised the international community's role in assessing Pakistan's nuclear rhetoric, underlining the need for global cooperation in such matters.

What are the potential consequences of this escalating conflict?

Geopolitical experts suggest that Trump's increased involvement with Islamabad has led to a recent deterioration in relations between the U.S. and the rest of the world during the Trump administration. Besides, Trump's adversaries, the Democrats, see no logic in such moves while also eliciting concern from the global community regarding the potential consequences of any escalation in conflict involving nuclear states.
