The Valley of Flowers National Park, a unique gem nestled in the picturesque Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, has officially opened its gates to the world. This annual event marks the beginning of a highly anticipated seasonal window, attracting visitors, nature enthusiasts, and trekkers eager to experience the Himalayan marvel. The valley's claim to fame lies in its rare alpine flora and awe-inspiring landscapes, making it a must-visit for those seeking a unique and enriching experience.
The Forest Department, serving as the custodian of the Valley of Flowers National Park, ceremoniously opened the park gates at 7 am. Their warm welcome at the main entrance added to the festive atmosphere, assuring visitors of a well-organised and safe experience.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of Flowers is a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike. Its rich biodiversity, boasting hundreds of species of rare alpine flowers, medicinal herbs, and Himalayan fauna, is a sight to behold. The valley, open from June to October, continues to captivate thousands from around the world, offering a rare glimpse into an untouched paradise nestled in the high altitudes of the Garhwal Himalayas.
On the first day alone, 49 visitors arrived to experience the valley’s natural wonders, signalling strong interest in this unique destination. The reopening ceremony was led by Forest Area Officer Chetna Kandpal, who opened the park gates following a traditional ritual at 7 a.m. The Forest Department extended warm greetings to visitors, creating a welcoming atmosphere as the trekking season officially commenced.
Enhancing Accessibility through Online and Offline Permits
Of the initial visitors, 45 had obtained permits through offline channels, while four took advantage of the newly introduced online booking system. This digital option, available on the official Forest Department website, enables tourists to plan their visits more efficiently and avoid last-minute hassles. Forest officials have emphasised that both offline and online methods remain available to ensure accessibility for all types of travellers.
The entry fee for the park is set at ₹200 for Indian nationals and ₹800 for foreign tourists. These charges contribute to the upkeep and preservation of the fragile ecosystem, as well as support essential conservation activities within the park.
Visitor Numbers Expected to Rise
So far, 62 permits have been issued for June, and authorities anticipate that visitor numbers will steadily increase throughout the blooming season, which lasts until October. The Valley of Flowers continues to attract trekkers, botanists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts from across India and around the world.
A Biodiversity Hotspot Unlike Any Other
Renowned globally for its extraordinary biodiversity, the Valley of Flowers is home to hundreds of species of rare and endangered alpine flowers, including vibrant blue poppies, primulas, and Himalayan bellflowers. Alongside its rich floral diversity, the valley also shelters a variety of medicinal herbs. Every two weeks, different varieties of flowers bloom.
It supports a range of Himalayan wildlife, including the Asiatic black bear, musk deer, and the elusive snow leopard.

The Trekking Adventure

Reaching the valley and spending time amidst the clouds and the mountains is a serene experience to be savoured. Most visitors access the valley through a trek starting from the base camp village of Ghangaria, approximately 10 kilometres from Govindghat, the nearest motorable point. The trek itself is moderately challenging, typically requiring three to four hours of hiking through scenic forests, streams, and meadows before arriving at the colourful valley.
The trail is dotted with wooden bridges and lookout points, offering multiple opportunities to capture the valley’s spectacular views and diverse flora. During the peak months of July and August, the valley is in full bloom, making it a photographer’s paradise and a haven for plant lovers. Seeing the flowers bloom and dancing to the tunes of the wind, the not-so-heavy sunshine, drizzling droplets of rain, and encouragement from fellow trekkers provide the best conditions for you throughout the trek.
You can stay at Ghangaria, altitude 3049 m, at night, and the next day, early morning, you can start for the Valley of Flowers. You can take a horse from Poolna to Ghangaria if you cannot walk. But from Ghangaria to the valley, you have to walk. Reaching the valley is not that difficult. There are benches available to rest on while walking. It is immaculate and beautiful. You can go ahead to the riverbed, which is around 4,5 km further from the check post. The entire path is Rocky, and in many places it is steep. Carrying a poncho, a thin jacket, a cap, a water bottle, food, and basic medicines. Additionally, given the high altitude, it is highly recommended that you proceed slowly and take breaks periodically.
After reaching there, it's up to you how much you like to explore within the valley. Please ensure you return by 5:00 PM.
The Forest Department closes the valley at 4 pm, so make sure to start climbing as early as 6 AM to cover most of the valley. The weather can change at any time here, so please bring rain covers.
